the so called "sweetest drug" @ 4/27/2008 08:01:00 PM

"Romeo and Juliet". i have seen the movie once, but the modern version. yung may mga baril na. where Romeo was portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio. still, the deep Elizabethan words were still present but it was like the modernized version of the play. but, as we all know, this "love" was probably the most tragic love affair ever written in history. yet, we still admire this work. it shows us about strong faith on how GoD would give us reasons to hold on to something close to impossible. we admire it because of it's intelligent use of words and the passion that comes with it.

i was in the sixth grade when i became so interested about "Romeo and Juliet". we were sitting in our chairs and probably doing something that's not to be done. because, hey! it's english! that day, we were discussing William Shakespeare with Ms. Ella. as a child, i thought that this would be an awfully great story. i thought that it has happy endings. but during that day, i stopped whatever i was doing because.. i like the topic! then i found out about the tragic ending about the star-crossed lovers. how romeo thought that juliet was dead but she was only pretending to be dead so she could marry him instead. but the news that was suppose to be sent to romeo failed and he drank some poison when he saw juliet laying on a t(tomb?) then after he drank the poison, he saw juliet woke up and then, juliet decides to kill herself. i was baffled. i wanted to watch it right away. so during the weekend, i did bought a VCD of the modernized version. it was exciting that i wanted to watch the original movie (the one where Juliet used a dagger, not a gun).

i was definitely in the "comparison area" that time coz it was the same time when i had my first love. so i could definitely relate since the movie was all about forbidden love and me and my first love's story was DEFINITELY forbidden. anyway, back to the story.. i actually salute both of them, coz despite their differences, they still managed to cling on to something that would set aside everything and just love each other unconditionally. though they had to face the tragic consequences of death. when romeo died and juliet woke up from her slumber. that time, she had a choice. whether to live or die. but she chose to face death because she couldn't live her life without romeo. if she lived, would you think she would be happy? the capulet-montague rivalry was still there. their deaths were the ones which opened the eyes of the rivals. so if juliet didn't die beside romeo that day, the capulets would probably be hysterical with what happened and the rivalry continuous.

tragic love affairs do have some good points din naman pala eh. but if we take a closer look, don't you think that it's the best form of love? i'm not saying that death would prove how much you love a person, but don't you think that when it comes to a point that you could lose everything, even your life, you still give it up just to be with the person you love, it proves how much you want to face the world together? typically, it's within the journey where we experience the most favorable of things. our destination is just a bonus for us to look back on what we have accomplished. and wouldn't looking back at them be really good? think about it. the point of giving up is just what measures the love we have on hold.

let me share with you a personal experience which happened just a while ago.
typical sunday mass. we went to our old parish were Ningning (childhood friend) and I would be LOAs. a lot has changed but of course, we still did our LOA thing.

we've probably heard dozens of homilies before, but i assure you, this sunday's homily was probably one of the best ones i've ever heard. "love is not simply giving your all. they say that love is love when you love somebody more than anything else, period. i don't believe any of those. i believe that somewhere along the way we would wish and trade anything we can trade for them to just give the love we gave. we wish for it to be returned. and when they can't return, we give up, maybe not that soon but along the way, we do. we've grown so hopeless that we may love a person who doesn't love us back, and that would definitely hurt. that mean that when we sum up everything together, love is simply expecting to be given your love back along with the sacrifices you need to face." those were the words of a "four-week" priest namely father Don. i was so amazed with this homily that after the mass, i asked him for his copy. he gladly gave it to me and i took off, gleaming while reading those magical words on a sheet of paper. i realized that he was right. we are easily capable of giving up when the love we give isn't returned. but, that's from what i see. i am still 14 years old and has a lot to see later on in my life, i haven't probably seen the best of loves and the worst. i know that there's still more out there, there would be more to see and to experience. and i know that somewhere along the way, i would definitely know much about this "sweetest drug" that gives us the wildest side effects and reasons to look for more.
